Name of short information of book on back cover?

Hi,

Could you tell me, please, what you call the text on (or on the inside part of) the cover of a book, which contains a brief fore-taste or summary of the work and often some words on the author, too, to help you decide whether you want to read it?

Thanks.

Hi,

The common and informal term is 'a blurb'.

Thank you, Clive, but does it have a more formal name, too? I can't seem to find it in the thesaurus Emotion: smile

Hi,

Can't think of a one-word term.

Hi

I too would have said blurb

A more formal word is synopsis

Hi Dave,

However, 'a synopsis' does not suggest information is included about the author.

Hi

I've just had to concede a discussion about whether "either" is an adverb or part of a conjunction: my posting is not going well this evening!

A synopsis is an overview of a work. Possibly, in giving the synopsis of the work, it is not legitimate to say who wrote it

I'm not sure about that..

I think simply 'cover' serves in some situations.

According to the cover, the author was born in 1948.

The cover suggests that it is a story about Britain in World War II.

Thank you, Dave Anon, Clive and Cymbol. Yes, I had that problem, too, with the word 'synopsys'. So 'cover' seems to save the day then
