It started out slow - one of those Nah-that's-not-right ideas you get and forget.

I guess "Nah" here is "no"?

No. There is no causal relationship here and nothing about hesitating. It started as one of those vaguely incorrect ideas that comes to your mind but then you (immediately) forget.
