Grammar

N to be

The king ordered the servant to be sold, with his wife and everything that he had. (because the servant had debt to the king, the master)

I am confused with "the servant to be sold."
Is it that the servant should be sold as they sold and bought slaves in old days, or just the wife and everything that he had, that he should sell?

Top answer

This appears to be older english like in fairy tales. It means that the king ordered that the servant, along with the servant's wife and everything the servant owned, all be sold to pay the debt. And yes, sold like slaves.
