I heard a crash and felt a terrific jolt. Glass and steel flew everywhere. My whole body seemed to be turning inside out. I heard myself scream.

Does the line in bold mean "My guts were turning out and my body was badly mangled?" Thanks.

I feel the same as Feebs does because the diference between the active -ing form (be turning) and passive simple tense (be turned). In my opinion, using the active coninuous voice is better for it grabs readers' attention.
