My whole body seemed to be turning inside out.

I heard a crash and felt a terrific jolt. Glass and steel flew everywhere. My whole body seemed to be turning inside out. I heard myself scream.

Does the line in bold mean "My guts were turning out and my body was badly mangled?" Thanks.

It just came to mind that it seems all right to me to say "My whold body seemed to be turned inside out." Is this the same as the the base sentence? What are your opinions? Thanks.
