The importance of the peak lies only in the fact that it defines the journey - APJ Abdul Kalam
Home is the first place to learn and that is where my journey began. As a child with an aptitude for numbers and calculations, I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to get acquainted with the managing of accounts at my parents’ hospital. In addition, owing to my parents’ peripatetic fervor, I observed how every single momentous event around the world was propelled by force of economic and financial policies. My knack now seems so natural that I know why my career lies in the field of Economics, over the subject of my graduation.
My first foray into this subject was in my high school. In addition to science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, I took up economics in my higher secondary. It was in this class that I was introduced to the basics of economics Banking terms that my father mentioned started making more sense to me. School grades evinced my scholarly aptitude. It was evident that general sciences had an upper hand on my grades than other subjects and I decided to pursue Engineering . Owing to my excellent performance in All India Engineering Entrance Examination I secured admission in an esteemed institute of India, Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT).
I opted for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering as my undergraduate major. Engineering prepared a background of a strong quantitative training through a broad array of courses that made me comfortable with multivaried calculus, matrices, probabilities , statistics , and linear programming to name a few. It allowed me to hone my thought process and infused a scientific temper in me,making my approach more analytical and logical. I could relate my study of material sciences with the understanding of economics as to how even a minute change in composition may lead to changes in properties at macroscopic level or the changes in price of a particular material may change the course of a particular industry.
Following an interdisciplinary approach in my learning I took the subjects “Basic Economics” and “Indian Economic Problems & Policies” in my second and fourth semester respectively. The contents of the subjects enhanced my understanding of basics of demand and supply, elasticity of demand and its determinants, competitions in national and international market, its effect on the currency exchange rates etc. The rise and fall in the value of stocks and Indian rupee became more clear to me. Alongside, I began to read “India Unbound” by Gurcharan Das which closely reflected the socio-economic changes that took place in India pre to post independence. The book also gave me a better insight of monetary policies of the central government and banks . Fiscal aspects of the Indian economy intrigued me and wanting to learn more I began to look out for opportunities that could serve my purpose.
During the course of my undergraduate studies, I have taken up internships regularly to explore real life work situations in my field. Having had a theoretical knowledge, I wanted to explore how these concepts are used in practical applications. My internship proved to be a perfect place. After my sophomore year, I did my internship at a well reputed multinational company, Tech Mahindra. I was placed at the finance department of their Delhi office. Mentored by the Head of Finance, Ms. Shewta Rai I was allotted a project on Annual Printing data of the company which included the financials along with the director’s and editor’s report of the entity. The task gave me knowledge on financial presentations, various disclosures, formatting concepts and regulatory requirements of the entity.
Along with my superior academic record, I was involved with extracurricular activities . In my second year, while organizing a technical fest, Neuron’ 12, I found myself handling the expenses and finances - both procuring and accounting. This encounter with real monetary numbers further helped me discern that I had the capability to pursue economics and finance. Additionally, my leadership abilities brewed up when I served as the organizing secretary of the techno-cultural fest Blitzschlag’ 13. Since allocation of logistics was my responsibility, I concentrated on supplying the best material in the least possible funds. My decisiveness and managerial skills were commended.
The years I spent in engineering helped me evolve intellectually and professionally. I acknowledged the importance of planning and familiarized myself with the pressure of deadlines. However, most importantly, these years helped me appreciate my interest in economics /money management and that I have the aptitude and ability to pursue it as a career.
After my graduation, to seek a career in Finance, I accepted an offer from a finance company. I started working with QOGIL, a group company of SREI Finances. This was my first industry based experience. Here I began learning about basics of market finance such as projections, forecasting , market strategies, compliances to name a few. The exposure enhanced my understanding of fiscal matters and helped me to apply the basics of economics that I had gathered in the years of my undergraduate study. I also grasped some computer skills like spreadsheets in MS Excel and Kingsoft , ERP and Tally.
I want to aid my existing skills with the knowledge of basic finance to achieve my career goals. I wish to learn more about current developments and techniques in field and acquire hands on experience of financial analysis. My nearest goal is to obtain a rewarding position in this profession and obtain a practical experience in areas such as pricing and sales strategy for stability and maximum returns on capital, risk management. Later I wish to pursue my career in the field of financial economics, perhaps at a policy advisory position. I would like to work on the monetary prospects of Indian economy and study of developmental policies.
With my passion, commitment and ability, I would do justice to this course as well.
