My son, Blanket

Michael Jackson named "his" third child "Blanket", claiming that people he knows use the term "blanket" as a noun to mean something that provides security and comfort. Is this standard? I've only ever heard "blanket" used as a noun to literally mean A BLANKET, and as a verb used to describe something that sort of encloaks or surrounds something. What's the deal with MJ's usage of "blanket" and even if he does know people who use the word in that way, what does he mean to suggest by naming his child "Blanket"?

BTW, does MJ blanket little boys in his semen? We may soon find out! How exciting!

  • [/nq] Security blanket.
  • cf Linus in Peanuts, Leo Bloom in The Producers etc.
  • It's not uncommon for a child to have a security fetish vested in a portable item - blankets seem to be a favourite choice, reminiscent as they are of the cot and the bedroom.
  • I guess Michael thought 'Prince Michael 3' would be pushing it.

Scout in honour of Jean Louise 'Scout' Finch, in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Rumer (not Rumor) in honor of the novelist Rumer Godden.

It happens that Frank Zappa did know better, ... than most of his contemporaries in any case. It is not at all unusual for art to evade contemporary understanding.

Speaking of good sailing, I learned that scuppers are those holes in the side of a deck that allows the water to run out. Does that have any relation to scuppering a ship? How about Scuppernong wine?

Don't forget "Dweezil" and "Ahmet".
You also left out the Spice Girls, whose children are named like Paris (MJ apparently

I don't know the phrase "scuppering a ship," or the wine reference. I think there are enuf Patrick O'Brien fans hereabouts to answer the first
