My parents bought my sister a/her scarf

I am a bit confused about the use of article or possessive adjective in the sentence below. Is there any difference in meaning between them? Which one is better? Thank you.

One of the best memories I will never forget was the moment my parents bought my sister a/her scarf.

Thank you.

If the identity of the scarf is now not important then it would be "a scarf". g. the sister still cherishes the scarf and it is the only one she owns) then "her scarf" may be suitable.

If the identity of the scarf is now not important then it would be "a scarf". If it is a scarf that is still specially known to the people concerned (e.g. the sister still cherishes the scarf and it is the only one she owns) then "her scarf" may be suitable.

Both are fine.

"her" gives a more intimate connection between your sister and the scarf; it makes the sentence more human and individualised.

"a" is generic, unindividualised, and some of that feeling is felt in the buying.
