my own walking stick was only for show

In the following dialogue, does "I can remember when my own walking stick was only for show. Well. Should things improve, do" mean "I can remember when I myself did not need a cane anymore and could walk on my own again. So, should you feel better, please contact me"?

Dialogue:
A: have you had time to consider my offer? The Vienna Academy has need of an artist as gifted as yourself. Small classes, dedicated students, your own etching studio...
B: I am most grateful for your generosity, your grace... But I'm afraid my health demands a more permanent retirement.
A: I'm terribly sorry to hear that. You have my sympathy, however... I can remember when my own walking stick was only for show. Well. Should things improve, do...

Yes - he is either hinting at the possibility that the artist may find his 'injury' gets better again and therefore he may want to take up the post offered, or perhaps that the artist is not really as unwell as he is purporting to be. It could have been said with the best wishes of the artist in mind or with a slightly sarcastic tone as he feels the artist is using an excuse that doesn't really ring true.

You are right. I think the best interpretation is "I remember those days that I myself took a cane in my hand only because I thought I had become old and needed a cane, while I did not actually need it".
