I read this sentence in an Oxford Dictionary. Shouldn't it be the receipt instead of a receipt?
My mom kicked up a stink when the store refused to accept her return without a receipt.
Surely the speaker is talking about some particular receipt, isn't he?

Are you sure? Which "Oxford" dictionary? I could only find it in Farlex. "Kick up a stink" is not in my dialect, and in any event it is not a fixed expression.
