My mother is a teacher, nurse, and best friend, all rolled into one.

Hi

Do you find this sentence OK? I mean, there is no article before best?

My mother is a teacher, nurse, and best friend, all rolled into one.

Thanks,

Tom

Top answer

The first "a" does the job for all three nouns. My mother is a teacher, (a) nurse, and (a) best friend, all rolled into one.

Thanks!

...but do we say "a best friend" at all?

Is it OK here, too?

She is my mother and a best friend.

It’s a little odd. I’d expect

My mother is a teacher, a nurse, and my best friend, all rolled into one.

Yes, when we see 'best friend' as a function rather than refer to a particular person's best friend.

A best friend is someone who is ready to help you whenever you need it.
He doesn't really need a best friend.
