topic:
Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student.
my response:
Should education be designed to meet individual need to be effective? Even though individual-based education seems to fit every student well, a balanced and effective education should also contain some nationwide curriculums. The reasons are, first nationwide curriculums help students be a better social member, second nationwide curriculums offer students basic skills and knowledge, third nationwide curriculums helps educator know how much have students learned.
Nationwide curriculums teach students how to be a good member in a society. After probably ten or twenty years of education, school students will inevitably become social members. Nationwide curriculums teach students commonly recognized value and principle of the society, which help them adapt to the society. On the other side, if students learn according to short term needs or personal interests and not know how to be a part of society, they will have difficulties entering and connecting to a society. For example, without knowing forgiveness and understanding, he would hardly find a friend. Also, without knowing cooperation, he would be isolated in a corner of society. Therefore, nationwide curriculums play an important role in socialization of students.
Additionally, students learn fundamental skills and knowledge in nationwide curriculums. Such basic and fundamental subjects such as logic, verbal and math, are important to daily judgment, interpersonal communication, and academic research. For instance, even assuming a student is very interested and well educated in Biology could make great contribution to anti-HIV medicine research, he would accomplish little if he do not know well how to logically organize his ideas in a paper properly, how to communicate to others his ingenious ideas using proper words, and how to count the probability the new medicine would inhibit HIV in common body conditions using statistical methods in the filed of mathematic. For that matter, an individual-based, but unbalanced education impedes further development of a student.
Furthermore, nationwide curriculums help teachers test how students have mastered in a certain field. Under nationwide curriculum system, educators can know how a specific student does in a national normalized test, in comparison with other students. On the other side, if the education was completely individual-based, it would be hard for educators to know how well a student do in a field, because of lack of reference frame. And only after teachers have known what the weak point is though test, can education become effective and efficient.
Some may argue that individual-based education might ensure that students are interested in study. However, interest itself does not necessarily lead to effectiveness of education and academic excellence. Interest can only lead one to the entrance of a field.
In sum, I concur that individual-based education might make the students active in the learning process. Nonetheless, it must be noted national curriculums are indispensable for effective and all-rounded education, in that education is a essential part of socialization, is foundation of future life, and needs test to examine its effectiveness. Therefore, education that contains both national curriculums and interested-directed curriculums is the education truly effective.
