Hi This is just my opinion: I think it is about the death of the Duke's soul. It is told as Victorian internal Gothic monologue (the Duke is speaking to someone else - but he's not really taking any notice of the other character) The poem starts to unfold various layers - there is a picture of his wife: his wife was unfaithful to him.
