The title of my lab report is: The comparison of survivorship curves of individuals in the Eastside Cemetery in Martin, TN My question is, does it make sense? Should I say "A comparison" or leave it as is or does the whole title sound bad?Thanks,Chandra

I would say 'A comparison'.

I would also consider saying '. . . of the survivorship curves . . . '.

I don't know what a survivorship curve is, but I assume that your readers will.

As usual, Clive's suggestion is correct and "A comparison" is preferred. "The Comparison" is not acceptable.

I have other questions that I hope you won't find too burdensome. I would like to start with the following recommendation for the title:

A comparison of (survivorship curves or survival curves) between individuals interred in Eastside Cemetary, Martin, TN, USA.

"Survival curves" is a term used more often than "survivorship curves", but, as I am certain you know, they do not mean the same thing. I raise the possibility of the two because I am not certain which term best fits the results you are reporting from your lab report.

A survivorship curve plots population figures against time for a group born in the same year, showing how many remain after each year, starting from birth.

Is your report a comparison of two specific groups interred in the same cemetery showing how many remained after each year of life, starting from birth? For example, is it a comparison of men versus women born in a specific year?. Or, perhaps, a comparison between ethnic groups or races all born the same year? My point is to be certain that you are comparing two or more different groups. Otherwise your report is an "analysis" of individuals rather than a comparison.

If you determine that your report is an analysis, then I suggest the following title:

An analysis of (survivorship curves or survival curves) between individuals interred in Eastside Cemetery, Martin, TN, USA.

If you determine that your report is a comparison between two or more groups, then I suggest you identify the comparators in the title:

A comparison of (survivorship curves or survival curves) of males and females born in 1875 and interred in Eastside Cemetary, Martin, TN, USA.

I have chosen to include the term "interred" for obvious reasons.

I hope that my suggestions have helped. If not, please disregard them.
