My job was to be a waiter

Hi! Could someone help me with this?

My student is writing a postcard to a friend and she said: My job was to be a waiter. THIS sounds bad to me. Am I right?? I would have said "I worked there as a waiter". What do you think?

Thank you!

"I worked there as a waiter" is almost always better. "My job was to be a waiter" is possible, but has limited use. It kind of sounds as if being a waiter was an act, or pretence, rather than an ordinary straightforward job.

I did not understand the limited use of the original sentence.
