"my friend" means you have only one friend?

Hi, is it true that if you say something like "He is my friend.", it sounds as if he is the only friend you have? and that it's better to say "He is a friend of mine." instead?
If so, in what kind of context does "my friend" imply you have only one friend and in what kind of context that's not the case?
