My friend john - grammar

Hi,

Do you know what name is used to describe the grammatical construct 'My friend John'. John plays the role of adding further definition to the word friend, so what is the name of the grammar rule that applies here?

Thanks

Ian

Hi, I was taught it's a " noun in apposition " (or " appositive "). Maybe other terms exist. org/wiki/Apposition says: Apposition is a grammatical construction in which two elements, normally noun phrases, are placed side by side, with one element serving to define or modify the other.
