Paragraph #1: Describe all aspects of the figure. Mention the names of the categories (in this case, the regions) to familiarize the reader with the subject.

The line graph compares four regions of the US in terms of the amount of single family housing construction during the period from 2006 to 2012. The regions are the Northeast, Midwest, South and West.

Paragraph # 2 Report main features. Pick out two or three for the paragraph.

Overall, the largest number of homes were constructed in the South, followed by the West, Midwest and Northeast. This order did not change over the period, although the numbers declined everywhere.

Paragraph # 3 Report some details, focusing on comparisons. In Task 1 you get the highest score by combining categories, and, in this sample essay, I chose to add up all regions to get the total. I used the total to compare the regions proportionately.

In 2006, a total of about one million eight hundred thousand homes were constructed, half being located in the South (900 thousand), and a quarter (450,000) in the West. By 2008, construction had slowed by half with a total of 910 thousand. As in 2006, 50% of the new houses were in the South (450,000), and a little over 20% in the West (200,000) Homebuilding continued to slump, bottoming in 2010 at 600 thousand units. As before, half (300 thousand) were in the South, and the other regions ranged between 80 and 120 thousand. Then the industry began to recover slowly; there were 650 thousand built in 2012. But only two of the regions had increased activity, the South and West. The Midwest had plateaued at 100,000 and the Northeast had continued to fall from 80 to about 50 thousand.
