are these sentences correct or not and why?

my favourite fruit is apples
my favourite vegetable is onions

My favourite fruit is apple. My favourite vegetable is onion.

I think singular is OK because you want to refer only to the kind of fruit or vegetable.
(Apples refers to many of one kind)
