My father's friends in the army

Can one use:
1) He is looking for three of his father's friends in the army.
instead of:
2) He is looking for three men who used to be his father's friends in the army.

Context: His father has left the army a long time ago.

Gratefully,
Navi.

Thank you very much Mr. Micawber,

How about:

A) ... his father's friends from his army days.
B) ... his father's friends from the army.

Gratefully,
Navi.

navitasanA) ... his father's friends from his army days.
That's OK.
navitasanB) ... his father's friends from the army.
That again is vague as to the time period.
