My eyes were swollen shut.

I feel weird about two verbs being together like swollen shut in a sentence. May I know what can you say about this subject line? Thanks a lot.

There's no problem with verb+adjective (as in "The door was painted black") so possibly the way to parse this is to consider "shut" as an adjective. (In fact, it's just occurred to me that you could also say "The door was painted shut".)
