Hi, I was writing my English paper and im no good with grammar, can someone help please?
The World Today In the world today, changes are normal and accepted by people in society. One of the changes in the world is the media. One can feel media all around them. It is used for business purposes, advertisement, and entertainment. Media has become an everyday visual. Although, those stated above are good purposes, media can also be seen as a negative aspect. Media changes the way we perceive our world negatively, by questioning what beauty really means, challenging what is right for the youth, and what is accepted by society. In traditional media, what’s being plastered on billboards, magazines, and Television is what’s considered beauty. While turning the pages in your favorite magazine, you see your typical skinny, tall girls. The reality is, the women we see in the magazines, and billboards are nowhere close to what the average female looks like. When superficial skinny models are plastered everywhere, society is being brain washed into believing this is standard; and should be one’s goal to look like. Young girls start to fall into this category, what is seen in the media is considered beautiful, and try to achieve this look no matter what it takes; resulting in bulimia, and anorexia. Face Book is a well known resource that can have an effect on young girls, resulting into illness. At the University of Haifa, researchers found, “Girls who frequent Face Book are more likely to develop a negative body image that can result in the onset of eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and exaggerated dieting.”(2). Media has a great effect on young girls when it comes to appearances. Girls are putting their health at risk, only to resemble what the media portrays as beautiful. This can damage a girl’s self esteem and lead into depression, or even death. There was a time when beauty wasn’t about how one can achieve to be thin, but the way a smile makes you look twice at ones face, or the curve of a person’s face, and eyes that can hold your attention. Throughout generations, the way society perceives our world when we think about media, is what’s being displayed has to be true and right, and there isn’t any way around it. Society has fallen to the conclusion that whatever is being advertised, and or being shown is considered hands down acceptable. This shouldn’t be adequate in society, and media is to blame. Media can affect young teenager girls, but also young children. Media is becoming a more dominant branch in children’s lives. It is more common to see a child/toddler with a device such as; iPods, smart phones, and iPads as you would an adult. Media is starting to consume children’s lives rapidly. It can be video games, exploring on a cell phone, or even watching television. These activities (Media), can have a negative effect on your child. According to Dr. Angeline Lillard, Researchers at University of VA says,” Young children are compromised immediately after watching a SpongeBob show. It’s not a good idea for children to watch stimulating cartoons if they need to exercise self control, and focus immediately afterwards” (3). A study shows,” After 9 minutes watching SpongeBob, 4-year old children’s ability to pay attention was impaired to the children who had been drawing.”(9). Media is affecting children in a negative way, by making it hard for them to stay focus and pay attention. This can negatively affect a child’s learning process, leading them down a path of no return. Whether it’s video games, or the violent context, and consuming many hours of television: This is not the best decision for the youth. This is an example of how things have changed, the way we perceive our world when thinking of the media. When the time was different, society didn’t rely on the media and children weren’t relying on television or video games as much in this generation today. Media was being used in moderation and not consuming all of a child’s time. Media is becoming a crutch society is leaning on for support and turning into a comfort place within the society.
