The story “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker, the title alone has a meaning the meaning behind the title signifies the use of daily things such as issues. The main issue in this story is that Dee wants to find out more about her background such as her race and culture. For example the biggest problem is the surrounding use of items that are at disagreement around them which is the quilts. For Dee the quilts are not actually not meant for warmth but they represent something more like the cultural background and the significant meaning and also the value of it means much more then her sister Maggie. The quilts to Dee is something to show off.

The second issue extends from there, they also have a racial issue the consideration of race and class among others. Race is an issued that I viewed and discussed in many different ways. This issue is on of the main themes in this story. The rural setting that Dee’s mother is a hard worker indicates that she didn’t have time to for an education or the motivation to think deeply about her race, culture, and racism. The fact that Dee moved she really did not have the bad life and did not go through wat her mom or Maggie went through. She was exposed to racial equality while being away. So she wanted to find out more about her race. But she does not understand the true meaning behind everything all she wants to do is fit in. Dee is a selfish and egotistical character with a superficial understanding of her inheritance. She characterizes the confusion and misguidance of young African Americans in the late 60s and 70s.

Dee then changes her name because she feels as if Dee was not something that had an African American meaning. She then changed her name to Wangero. She try’s and collect all the things from her past. She talks about the benches and how they were very lovely and as she finishes that sentence she remembers that she wanted to ask for the churn top . She says to her mother “ this churn top is what I need”. she also wanted the dasher. She anted to use the churn top as a center piece for her table. It almost seemed as if she wanted everything that was made by hand or had a significant value of history. You can tell that the mother did not want to give her the things cause it meant more to the mother because the mother actually used it and Dee will only put it to no good or use.

It seemed as if the only thing that actually mattered was that Dee wanted, and no matter what, she was going to get the quilts she set her eyes on. Dee had many reasons why she should get theses quilts. And also had many reasons why Maggie should not. The question that was asked was “ can I have these old quilts?” and mama said “ why don’t you take one or two of the others?” as if the answer was no but you can still have another newer one and the older ones. She wanted the old one because of the history and value it had with her grandma making it form some old dresses.

Dee really wanted something that was meaning full to her. She would not settle for less when mama try’s to buy her out of wanting the older quilts. The quilts belong to her sister Maggie but Dee thinks that she will not appreciate them lie herself will. Dee wants to basically cherish them and just let them collect dusts while she hangs them to preserve it. While mama wants Maggie to use them since no one else has.

Who is selfish in this situation ? Dee! Cause she comes from out of town to learn more about her self and her culture , race, and ext.. that she is ignorant to her background. She doesn’t understand that not every one can get what they want since it seems like no one has turned her down nor said no to her she thinks she can get her way with what ever she wants. Maggie let her sister have the quilts and she did it and it didn’t bother her she said she could remember her grandma with out those quilts. Her mother still telling her to take another one she tells momma that she will not understand the heritage.

Dee also does something that was almost rude. She basically tells Maggie to do something with her life. When Dee left Maggie was helping her mother they didn’t have the knowledge to go and study. But still Maggie is kind at heart where Dee is just something to look at and she really is a selfish being that will lack the knowledge that Maggie has. Because Dee lacks what Maggie knows about tradition and how to make quilts whereas Dee doesn’t really know what hard work is.
