London's subway system is the earliest one, which started in 1863, that is almost 150 years old. The youngest one is Los Angeles's, opened in 2001, only 9 years old. The systems in the other four cities were all built in 20 century.
The oldest subway system of London is also the longest. Paris's takes the second, which is almost 200 kilometers shorter than London's. Kyoto's and Los Angeles's are among the shortest, which are merely 11 and 28 kilometers respectively.
Interestingly, in spite of neither the oldest nor the longest, the subway system of Tokyo is the busiest, which serves 1,927 million passengers every year. Paris's as the second has 1191 passengers per year. Kyoto's and Los Angeles's are among the least, only having 45 and 50 million passengers respectively, aproximately 40 times less than Tokyo's.
