My car always sticks in first gear

My car always sticks in first gear when going up a hill.

Hi,

What does the bold in the above mean exactly? Does it imply my car break down or something else? Thanks.

Not a breakdown; in that case, the car would stop. This is an ongoing problem: the car's automatic transmission will not shift into a higher gear, so it continues up the hill in low gear. Presumably going down or on a level road the problem does not occur.
