"My back is to the wall." ?

Hello,

what does "my back is to the wall" means? It was used as;

"Reason I bring it up is simple. My back is to the wall here. You know what it means when someone's back is to the wall?"

and in the next paragraph he says that "it means there are no constraints."

Actually I thought that it means that "he has nowhere to escape" or something like that at first but it turned out to be something completely different. I have to translate this, so could you please tell me if it is an idiom (and the exact meaning of it, if it is.)?

True.

My guess is that the subsequent comment means that since the person in question has nothing to lose (i.e. his back is against the wall) he will attack his enemies without mercy ("no constraints").
