Hi teachers,
It is because we recognize that 'bitter' and 'sweet' are mutually exclusive and collnot normally ocable that the junction of them can be effect.
plz explain the sentence, especially the underlined phrases.

It is because we recognize that 'bitter' and 'sweet' are mutually exclusive and not normally collocable that the junction of them can be effective.

recognize = understand
mutually exclusive = opposites; one excludes the other

Put them together and we have a very effective concept: Choosing the winner of the scholarship was a bitter-sweet experience for us, because the essays were all so very good but we could choose only one.
