Mute in shock

Is this sentence correct:



"After hearing the news, I was mute in shock."

There is nothing really wrong with it, but it sounds odd just the same. "Stricken dumb" and "dumbstruck" are available, but they are quite literary. I would probably go with "so shocked I couldn't speak".
