Hi. Please tell me when you want to say to someone that he or she has to use the past tense to describe what happened in the past, whether we should use the phrase "the past tense" or "the past tenses." I think we can the use of the modal verb "must" is correct and will not be misleading. Thank you in advance for your help.
(saying to another person)
You must use the past tense (the past tenses?) when you want to describe what happened in the past.
