Must-read books for every literary English-speaker

Hello,

Could you please enumerate several books, which you consider to

be major milestones in education of every literary English-speaking

person? I do not expect a large list; a couple of titles will be quite

enough. If it's difficult to recall a particular great one out of a specific

category, let's narrow down the choice to novels originally written

in English.

[To moderators] I didn't find any other forum branch that my
question will fit better than the "Vocabulary Questions", but if you such

a place, please move my post there.

Thanks in advance.

I do have difficulties in reading classic story, I tried Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, and Great Expectations.. some of the sentences or the words still feel weird for me, some of them even can't found in dictionary.. so after reading a couple pages, I decided to read Harry Potter, I think it's easier to understand.

It depends on what you want to get from the reading. If your aim is

simply to get pleasure, then your choice may be justified. However, if
