MUST KNOW!

I've been reading an article from an English teacher, who was saying he once came across this job application, where a woman, after describing something unpleasant about her life on her descriptive essay, wrote down the following: "No one deserves it".

He failed her immediately, saying that was grammatically wrong.

After some research, i couldn't still pin down why. Can you, please?

I appreciate your help.

Thank you!

My dictionary says deserve means to get something as a right for our behaviour or effort. Going by the meaning I doubt the appropriateness of the word here. The teacher would have found it all right if her statement had the effect of this one: No sin can get such a punishment.

I assume that in context the reader would be able to see that this meant No one deserves to be treated like this. The sentence may have been used in a strange way within the context of the sentences that came before it. As an isolated sentence it's not really ungrammatical, though most people would say "this" or "that

Thank you for your reply, CJ!

Yes, i thought about that too. In fact, there cannot be any other explanation, but because the teacher I mentioned left out everything else from that essay, he probably fooled me into thinking "no one deserves it" was wrong regardless. Which clearly isn't!

I've emailed him, can't wait for his reply, really. Promise i will share it with you in case he
