Talking about an event I took my friend to a month ago.

The person asks me how was it and I say:

The performance was great and they could sure dance! Or can I just say:

They could sure dance. Or should it be:

They can sure dance.

What's the difference between using the present and past tense. What would a native speaker say?

You can use any of those unless the company has closed the show and is giving no more performances; in that case, 'can' is not appropriate.
