Music and lyrics

When we use the term "music" in connection with a song, do we refer to the entire song including vocal parts or do we just refer to the tune and background sound (non-lyrical part) ?

For example, if I hate the lyrics of a particular song but like the tune, should I say "The lyrics of this song are really lousy, but the music is great" ? Would that make sense ?
