What is the difference between murder and homicide?

They both mean the killing of one person by another. If it's an illegal killing, it's murder. [That's how we end up with justifiable homicide, accidental homicide, vehicular homicide.]

the difference between homicide and murder can be understood in two aspects:

1. Intention

2. Knowledge

under the aspect of Intention,

in culpable homicide: when the death is caused with the intention of causing such bodily injury as is likely to cause death.

in murder: when death is caused by causing such bodily injury as the offender knows to be likely to cause death of the person to whom the harm is caused.

under the aspect of knowledge,

in culpable homicide: the death is caused with the knowledge that the act is likely to cause death.

in murder: the death is caused with the knowledge that the act is so imminently dangerous that it must in all probability cause death or such bodily injury that is likely to cause death.

culpable homicide can come under murder. but murder cannot come under culpable homicide. in murder death is "the" probable result.
