Munching

Do we say,

He is munching / mnching on an apple.

Greetings, although the dictionaries state that the prepositions on/at after munch are optional, it appears adequate to say: He is munching on an apple. Some examples with the preposition absent: I munched my way through a huge bowl of cereal. He sat in a chair munching his toast.

Many people find munching an apple awkward, and use munching on an apple, which I find more appropriate.
