Multiple sentence tenses and comma before and

I have a question about this sentence. i believe it to be incorrect on multiple levels in both tense changing and improper use of a comma before and without the second clause being independent. Please help me.

Here it is: They have appeared on message boards and in blogs, and spread by word of mouth.

Thanks in advance
