Multiple choice?

Hi teachers,

There is question that I find difficult.

People who ---- every day but still spend a lot of time sitting might get more benefit if that exercise ---- across the day, rather than in a single session.

a- exercise / were spread

b- exercise / are spread

Which one could be the correct answer here? I think B is the correct choice but I'm not sure what makes the option a wrong.

Thank you.

Top answer

A is right; B is wrong because 'exercise' is an uncountable noun.

I don't understand, sorry.

"are" and "were" both plural, aren't they?

Can you give a brief explanation?

'Were' is the subjunctive form for both singular and plural subjects.

I think If clause confused me much.

If type 1 (if present / will; may; might)

But in this sentence "if" is in type 2 I guess.
