multiculturalism in canada

hi guys, i am a student from vancouver
i had this english essay topic of "is multiculturalism successful in canada?"
my opinion is no, because in canada, especially in vancouver, almost all cultures form small groups and isolate themselves instead of blend in with other cultures and form a larger better mixture. But on the other hand, isn't the "canadian cultural mosaic" supposed to be preserving the uniquness of different cultures?
i personally didn't like the topic, because i believe i do not have to right to judge whether if a culture has had made an effort to building a national identity
but it really got me into thinking about what multiculturalism really is.
i hope that someone can tell me about his or her personal opinions on both questions
thank you

Multiculturalism is not a matter of everyone blending in to form an overall larger better mixture as you put it. A multicultural society contains 'many cultures', people with different languages, races, lifestyles, religions, backgrounds etc living in one overall society, but retaining many individual properties. Really, the question is asking how well does Canada function as a multi-cultural society.
