Mugging up

Context: Studying subject at last minute for the only examinations. But, not focusing on their growth/development.

Some students are only mugging up for examinations instead of their career development.

Please check the sentence.

I am not sure that "career development" is suitable here. Please suggest it.

I used to say cramming, not mugging. I don't know what students say now.
