Muesli and cereal

Are muesli and cereal the same thing?

Recently I read a couple of British boardies mentioning they ate muesli for breakfast.

I'd guess 'muesli' is what Americans call 'cereal'. Am I off again?

Thanks.

Muesli is a particular type of cereal - a mixture of oats, other grains, dried fruit, etc. -- sort of like granola, but less sweet and not crunchy.

Yes, I think 'muesli' is a swiss word that refers to a specific mix of crushed grain, various nuts and dried fruit, probably invented in the alps a long time ago as a means to provide sustenance over the long cold winters...
Most cereal brands would have such a blend within the array of products they offer to the customer, and it's really kind of a generic word not a copyrighted trademark like
