Mud or the mud

Hello,

Are both of these sentences correct?

"It helps you stay protected from the mud."

"It helps you stay protected from mud."

Is the first one just the preferred one, or is it the only correct one?

e.g.

These trainer covers protect your shoes from getting muddy.

These gaiters are great for hiking. They protect your legs or jeans from being soiled by mud.
