Grammar

much,many

There was an almost universal aspiration after something new; all classes were thouched in different ways by the new spirit, and the king himself was in symphaty with much of the humanitarian ideas of the time.

1.King himself was in symphaty with much of the humanitarian ideas of the time.

2. King himself was in symphaty with many of the humanitarian ideas of the time.

Hi, Is it correct that the 'much' in the first sentence refers to 'a large part' rather than 'a large number' and as to the 'many' in the second sentence it is just the opposite?

Hi,

That's the reason why a sentence like 'King himself was in symphaty with much ideas of the time.' doesn't seem correct to me. However this sentence, 'King himself was in symphaty with much of the humanitarian ideas of the time
