Much the most, the very most...

(1) "It was much the most expensive hotel I've ever been to."

(2) "It was the very most expensive hotel I've ever been to."

(3) "It was by far the most expensive hotel I've ever been to."

Are the uses of putting emphasis on superlative correct? Can you think of any other emphasises of superlative?

Thanks in advance.

The first two make me cringe. Use 3; that's how I would write it. No, I can't think of any others offhand.

I have heard 'the very most' once in a while, but 'by far the most' is used more often.

I suppose you could say, "definitely the most expensive" or "certainly the most expensive", but those don't seem to emphasize the superlative directly; y
