In the following sentence, should it be "much recent" or "more recent"? (I might be wrong, but is it "more recent" because "book" is a countable noun?)
"The book that I recommended is more recent compared to the one that you suggested."

It should be "more recent". ", unless preceding a noun that it modifies. In this case it has nothing to do with "book" being countable.

It should be "more recent". "much recent" is always wrong, as is any "much + adj.", unless preceding a noun that it modifies. In this case it has nothing to do with "book" being countable.
"more recent compared to ~" is somewhat illogical when examined carefully. Just say "more recent than ~".
