Much less

What's the meaning of "much less" in the following two sentences? 1. Lamb and chicken were eaten in similar quantities, while much less fish was consumed. 2. The consumption of fish also declined, but much less significantly to just below 50 grams. Thank you for replying.

Thank you for your help. Regarding the second sentence, can I say "The consumption of fish also declined, mush less significantly, to just below 50 grams"? What I am thinking is "but" should follow a new sentence while "but mush less significantly to just below 50 grams" is not a sentence.

Here, it is assumed that the words "it declined" occur after "but", and in that case you have a complete independent clause after "but".

just wondering in what circumstances can I omit the subject? For example, in you above statement, (it declined) much less significantly.

Additionally,rather than 'much significantly', I thought that 'less significant' would be the stuff that I am always using. So can you please tell me the reason for this as well? Thank you.
