‘much injured’ or ‘very injured’?

Could you teach me which is correct, (a) or (b)? (This is a quiz at a school in Japan.)
(a) The firefighter was much injured in the fire.
(b) The firefighter was very injured in the fire.

I myself feel ‘badly’, ‘seriously’ or ‘severely’ is much more natural than ‘much’ or ‘very.’
