Much / a lot / many

Hi,

Help me figure this out. I never paid attention to such basics things as this but what is the difference between these sentences? Is it their formality and informality or is there more to it? Are all of them correct?

I went shopping and spent a lot of money.
I went shopping and spent much money.

Is there much unemployment in that area?
Is there a lot of unemployment in that area?

There are a lot of monuments and a lot of historic buildings in Rome.
There are many monuments and many historic buildings in Rome.

She gave me a lot of information.
She gave me much information.

He has so much money!
He has very much money!

Thanks!

Hi, As a general rule, you can only use much and many in questions and negative sentences. You can use much and many in affirmative sentences if they begin the sentence. I assume, you already know that much is used for uncountable nouns and many for countable ones.

You got all right but one.
You need to say

There are so many/ a lot of monuments and historic buildings in Rome.

I would like to add that, very much can be used but not as a determiner/quantifier but as an adverb.
Ex. Thank you very much.
