Mrs. Dalloway

I am reading Mrs. Dalloway for Virginia Wolf and I have hard time keeping up with the first few pages, it is very confusing.
What is it about and why did the writer use the mainstream conscious?

aleen1 What is it about and why did the writer use the mainstream conscious? Virginia Woolf is not easy to read, but Mrs Dalloway is one of her most accessible and best-crafted mature novels, in my opinion. If you think this is confusing, try The Waves .

  • Mrs Dalloway is an investigation into the woman's cogitations and remembrances during the day that she prepares and hosts her party: that is why it is stream-of-consciousness.
  • It is autobiographical, so it contains themes of mental disorder and suicide, of homosexuality, and of indecisiveness about marriage choices.
