Moving in

Talking about moving into a unfinished apartment complex. I tried to sleep there yesterday, but the debris and dust made my asthma worse. I say:

I've tried sleeping there and I just can't. Or

I've tried sleeping there and I just couldn't.

WHich are useable and what's the difference?

Thanks!
