Movie writing?

I was watching a movie and I came across this: A: You are not needed, welcome, or wanted. You have only been spared because you're my brother's greatest weakness. And I cannot show mercy to those who would demonstrate threat towards this family.

If anyone needs any context, the person (B) who has been spared was sent to a jail instead of being sentenced to death (im pretty sure).

How is it "not showing mercy" by sparing someone?

This is what I think after some minutes:

I have been interpreting it incorrectly, and the reason why they are sparing him is to ensure that no one else gets ahold of person B. This is because a person might be able to use him(B) to destroy his brother, and if that occurs, the person (A) does not want to show mercy to the person that is threatening his brother just because the oppressor has person (B)

The movie is called "The Originals" which is a spinoff of Vampire Diaries.
