Movie "naked kiss"

Question

The main character, the girl named Kelly is in jail for murder. A woman that will testify against her (the owner of the bar with prostitutes) comes to visit her.
Kelly sais to the investigator: "You really scraped the sewer to dig up your character witnesses, didn't you?

The woman answers: I hate being a thing, sweetie, but you put every co (or coll???) girl in the country right on the spot.

What did that woman mean? I don't understand the both parts of the phrase "being a thing" and "put girls on the spot"
Does she mean put in danger or put in court as witnesses?

There are no subtitles, so I don't know what exacly she said, I can't figure out this "coll" word.

Call girl: a female prostitute who can be hired by telephone.
"On the spot": in an embarrassing position.

"Being a thing"; I don't recognise this - perhaps it's American? I guess it's similar to "being a pain". (Being obnoxious.)

It's hard to say what the woman means without additional context, but I would say "on the spot" probably was used as in definition 2 http://www.freedictionary.org/?Query=on%20the%20spot.

I have no idea what she means with the use of the word "thing".
